WINTER’S WONDERS

Sue O’Donnell. 05.02.21

Winter’s wonders in colour are surprisingly so.

There is more variety to be found

If carefully looking where key plants grow.

Many are tiny, yet cover the ground,

Others bloom up above where we usually look around,

So let your sight upwards gaze.

The Creator, our Father, never an opportunity forsook,

You could be surprised and even amaze at what you see.

At least twelve key plants define winter

Varied in texture, style, formation and colour.

Some bold, braving the elements, being woody and strong.

Whichever their species, to the Lord God they belong.

Plants range from the prickly but pretty heather,

Some with variegated leaves and as sweet a perfume as a song,

God designed to withstand the harshness of cold weather.

Often you can cut, bring indoors to perfume a room in fragrant splendour.

Some are daffodil in sunniest yellow bright,

Like chimonanthus praecox or ‘winter sun’ mahonia.

All aglow, a true winter treat, a delight.

Who needs to await the date when spring joy will have begun!

Those which are climbers waft now their scent,

Like lonicera ‘Winter beauty’ the honeysuckle flowering freely,

As if a treat from heaven is meant,

With blooms too many to even try counting!

Winter’s wonders are a significant part of God’s creativity ,

Do not miss this nor discount it,

For the horn of plenty includes all seasons.

We only have to look about us to be assured of this.

Creator Father, thank You for all the wonders of winter, which add such pleasure to life. May we open our eyes to see Your beauty wherever we are, for this adds such joy to life. Ever let us treasure Your creativity

and glory in our praise of You. Amen.
